Since its foundation in 1994 as a formal research unit within Aberystwyth University, the Centre for Glaciology has become one of the leading British research groups concerned with the study of glaciers and their sedimentary products.
Our aim is to identify and measure cryospheric processes, and to evaluate their role in past, present and future global environmental change. The emphasis on field research in process glaciology is intended to provide realistic constraints on the development of numerical models, and to underpin the interpretation of past glacial records. Our core research themes are in the fields of glacier dynamics, palaeoglaciology and applied glaciology.
The Centre comprises five academic staff, several research students and occasional research fellows. In addition, a number of distinguished glaciologists and glacial geologists hold visiting professorships and fellowships. The Centre also runs a taught one-year MSc Glaciology programme.
Our field research covers a broad geographical spread, and we collaborate with colleagues in many countries. In recent years these have included Antarctica, Britain, Chilean Patagonia, mainland Norway, Arctic Norway (Svalbard), the Swiss & French Alps, the Nepalese Himalaya, New Zealand, the Peruvian Andes and the Yukon.
