Lost Cone Drilling Set

Technical advice:
Description:

The lost cone drilling method is quick, efficient and produces a relatively minor disruption on the surface. Applications of the lost cone drilling method include monitoring well pipes, usually with a small diameter for environmental research which also extends to groundwater level and contaminant monitoring.

The specially designed lost cone is hammered into the soil using an electric percussion hammer which is placed on the casing (fig A). The lost cone produces a very straight bore hole that is slightly wider in diameter than the casing in order to reduce the friction. On reaching the desired depth a filter tube is lowered through the casing or sensors can be left in the bore hole (fig B). After drilling the lost cone is left in the soil. This procedure makes it easier to reach greater depth and the friction on extracting the casing is limited. Subsequently the casing can be extracted using the 2-person operated rod puller in combination with the universal casing and rod pulling clamp (fig C).

Advantages of the Vanwalt lost cone drilling kit is that it comprises a complete set, a fast and efficient drilling method, no large means of transport required allowing operation in less accessible areas and the special shape of the lost cone means that there is less friction when the casing is inserted and extracted again.

The complete set for lost cone drilling contains: an electrical percussion hammer, an aggregate with insulation guard, striking pens, drive-cone holder for percussion casing, steel casing, pulling equipment, lost cones and various accessories.

Before use checklist:

1. Make sure there is sufficient fuel in the correct ratio for the Cobra drill.

2. Make sure the Cobra drill is up to date on servicing and that all the parts of the drill kit are with the drill for the necessary fieldwork.

3. Make sure that you have sufficient plastic inner tubing for the borehole.

4. Make sure you book the GPS if you require the location of the borehole.

After use checklist:

1. Make sure the drilling kit is cleaned and put away correctly (all parts checked) following its use.

2. Make sure that if the GPS was used that the batteries have been put on charge and data is subsequently downloaded promptly from the GPS.
